About Iliad
Iliad is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing foundational AI alignment research. We run the Iliad Intensive, the Iliad Fellowship, and a range of conferences that bring together researchers working on the hardest problems in AI safety. We also incubate research organizations and an academic journal, and have an internal research team. We're a small and quickly growing team.
About The Role
Some of the most important Iliad-affiliated research is invisible to the technical people who’d be best placed to work on it. It is your job to fix this. In this role, you will create educational videos on foundational topics in AI alignment targeted at a mathematically mature audience. The videos should be technically substantive while being crafted well enough to reach a wide audience. You may get loosely inspired by well-known Youtube channels like Veritasium, Numberphile, Physics Girl, or 3Blue1Brown. Please find videos of a previous 5-week trial on our Youtube channel.
This is a solo role: you'll handle research, scripting, animation, recording, and editing yourself. We expect to extend to a permanent role if the position proves effective for our outreach strategy.
Responsibilities
- Understand the kind of technical talent we want to attract to Iliad-led programs like the Iliad Intensive, Fellowship, conferences, or to our affiliated organizations
- Interface with Iliad’s outreach team to strategize about the types of videos that work in various media; they handle publishing and distribution
- Work with AI alignment researchers to make their work accessible in video form
- Ensure the videos are so accessible that they can reach a wide audience, while being technically compelling even to the most serious audience
As the first hire, you have ownership over the entire video strategy and the ways that the potential team develops over time. As Iliad is growing quickly, your role may adapt to changing needs of our program and Iliad as a whole.
Requirements
- Passion for making hard technical topics accessible to a wider audience
- Demonstrated strong technical ability or prior experience in creating video content
- A university degree in mathematics, physics, theoretical computer science, or a closely related field
- Knowledge of the AI alignment field comparable to having completed parts of the Iliad Intensive
- Evidence of the ability to craft compelling narratives, ideally in the form of videos
- A broadly general skillset that can be applied to many tasks
- Comfort working in a fast-moving organization where priorities and roles will change
- Curiosity and ability to use AI to augment, improve, and automate various aspects of your own work
We encourage you to apply even if you do not hit every criterion! For example, if you are technically strong and think you might learn video production quickly, please apply even if you have no prior experience.
