Victim Witness Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct assistance and support to crime victims and witnesses throughout the legal process.
  • Assess victims' immediate needs and connect them with appropriate medical, counseling, housing, financial, transportation, and community resources.
  • Cook up meetings, interviews, court appearances, travel arrangements, and communication between victims and legal staff.
  • Prepare victims and witnesses for court proceedings by explaining the judicial process and answering questions.
  • Provide courtroom support before, during, and after hearings and trials.
  • Aid in the preparation of victim impact statements and restitution documentation.
  • Keep victims informed of significant case developments, court dates, hearings, sentencing, and offender status in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations to coordinate victim services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, state, and federal victim service providers to expand available resources.
  • Participate in community outreach activities, educational presentations, and victim awareness events.
  • Maintain accurate case files, reports, databases, and program documentation.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and other administrative documentation as needed.
  • Ensure confidential and sensitive information is handled in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Victim Witness Program.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working with victims, witnesses, legal professionals, law enforcement, social services, or within a judicial environment is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact compassionately and professionally with individuals experiencing crisis or trauma.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn case management and database systems.
  • Able to prepare reports, maintain records, and accurately enter and retrieve data.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
