Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. About the role

The VP, Tax Management & Compliance assists the Vice President and Senior Vice President of Tax Management & Compliance in all tax functions of The Church Pension Fund and its affiliates (collectively, “CPG”). This includes tax planning, research, and day-to-day compliance, both within the United States and globally. The role also involves addressing non-tax compliance matters within the Corporate Finance department, collaborating with other CPG compliance coordinators, and serving as a backup for the VP and SVP when unavailable.

Responsibilities

  • Operate as a technical resource to various business/corporate units within CPG, including Corporate Finance, Business Compliance, Human Resources, Benefits Policy, and Legal, to resolve tax issues, maintain compliance, minimize tax liabilities, and recommend compliance strategies.
  • Advise as a subject matter expert on federal and state employment tax matters, including:
    • State income taxation of hybrid and remote employees
    • State unemployment insurance
    • FICA taxation for deferred compensation arrangements
    • Imputed income tax reporting for employer-provided benefits
    • Tax reporting for personal use of company vehicles
    • Tax reporting for clergy compensation
    • Hong Kong tax compliance and reporting for employees in the Hong Kong office and U.S.-based employees working in Hong Kong
  • Advise on tax reporting and income tax withholding for U.S. and non-U.S. persons related to retirement benefits, annuities, life insurance, death benefits, and disability benefits for clergy, lay members, and beneficiaries.
  • Collaborate with business units administering benefit programs for The Episcopal Church, including:
    • Annual review of Puerto Rico tax forms (Form 480.7C) for clergy, lay members, and beneficiaries
    • Annual clergy housing allowance election process for the Diocese of Puerto Rico
  • Update the Episcopal Employer Tax Reporting Guide, Episcopal Clergy Tax Guide, and income tax withholding forms for retirement/death packages annually.
  • Ensure proper tax document collection from nonresident aliens to determine correct U.S. income tax withholding.
  • Calculate and file the annual federal excise tax under Internal Revenue Code Section 4960 (Form 4720).
  • Oversee tax reporting for informational forms (e.g., Form 1099, Form 1042, Form W-2, Form 941, Form 1094/1095, Form W-9/W-8) and ensure timely filing and tax deposits.
  • Manage the annual Form 720 (Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return) for the Episcopal Church Clergy and Employees’ Benefit Trust (VEBA) and execute the PCORI fee payment.
  • Renew New York City real property tax exemptions for CPG properties annually.
  • Monitor federal, state, and international tax updates, including prospective legislation, and advise business units on impacts and procedural modifications.
  • Resolve compliance inquiries and examinations from U.S. and international tax authorities, working with external advisors to address matters cost-effectively.
  • Develop, maintain, and update tax policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry and government regulations.
  • Conduct annual enterprise tax risk assessments, identify compliance gaps, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to mitigate risks.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing tax team while fostering collaboration with business units and managing relationships with external tax preparers and consultants.
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors and consultants domestically and internationally, and communicate effectively with CPG employees, including the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Analyze, interpret, and apply critical thinking to assess risk and make sound business decisions, assisting the SVP with enterprise projects or initiatives.
  • Perform essential functions on-site for relationship building and collaboration.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Accounting or related field (required).
  • CPA certification (required).
  • Minimum of 15+ years of tax experience with a major public accounting firm or corporate tax department.
  • Managerial or Team Lead experience (required).
  • Significant involvement with large tax compliance engagements for complex organizations.
  • Experience with tax issues relating to employee benefit plans.
  • Experience with international individual and corporate taxation.
  • Experience with tax issues affecting nonprofit organizations.
  • Experience with compliance issues relating to payroll and unclaimed property.
  • Ability to serve as a subject matter expert for multiple corporate departments (Finance, Legal, Investments, HR, Compliance) and manage external tax advisor relationships.
  • Strong organizational, tax preparation, and tax review skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with senior management, external counsel, and consultants.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong people management skills, including coaching and development.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint).

Schedule

Hybrid work environment requiring in-office presence Tuesdays through Thursdays, with remote work flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.

Pay

Salary range: $220,000 - $255,000.
