Vice President, Digital Payments Engineering (Wallets & Agentic, eCommerce Experiences)

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced engineering leader to lead the Wallets, eCommerce and Agentic Commerce platform for American Express. This platform is used by tens of millions of cardholders around the world. You’ll be part of the Digital Payments and Labs Engineering team, developing new experiences and platforms at the intersection of payments, identity, and AI. You will influence the direction of agentic commerce within Amex and the broader industry.

Responsibilities

• Lead director-level teams building device/eCommerce wallets, eCommerce checkout journeys, and the Agentic Commerce Experiences (ACE) product in partnership with leading tech companies and industry bodies.
• Work with product managers and leaders to define product direction, provide thought leadership on emerging technologies, and create best-in-class digital payment experiences.
• Perform hands-on architecture, design, and development of elegant, efficient, secure, and scalable solutions.
• Mentor and lead scrum teams, collaborating closely with product teams to drive solutions and delivery.
• Actively participate in solution conversations and influence leading tech companies and industry standards bodies like EMVCo and FIDO.
• Engage in design reviews to ensure consistency and alignment with company goals.
• Drive consistent development practices across tools and common components, embracing agentic development tools.
• Develop a deep understanding of current and potential integrations with other systems and platforms.
• Identify opportunities to adopt new technologies to solve existing needs and improve productivity.
• Foster a collaborative spirit across multiple teams, prioritizing the right outcomes for the company.
• Lead the adoption of AI development tools for your area.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 15+ years of equivalent experience in related disciplines.
• Proven record of building distributed applications.
• Demonstrated ability to design solutions in collaboration with product teams and third parties.
• Ability to work collaboratively and influence outcomes across functional areas.
• Experience mentoring developers through code reviews and disseminating knowledge.
• Experience building scalable, low-latency APIs in high-performing, iterative development teams.
• Thorough understanding of modern tech stacks, API design, multi-threaded programming, data structures, networking, SQL, and NoSQL databases.
• Self-motivated with the ability to thrive in a just-in-time environment.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Understanding of lean principles and efficient software development practices (a plus).
• Experience with payments technology and payment cryptography (a plus).
• Knowledge of iOS or Android development (a plus).
• Publication of blogs or participation in industry forums (a plus).
