About the Opportunity
Our client is a rapidly growing, private equity-backed organization operating in a fully remote environment. As the company continues to scale through both organic growth and acquisitions, they are seeking a strategic and hands-on Vice President, Controller to lead the accounting function and build a best-in-class financial infrastructure capable of supporting continued expansion. This is a highly visible leadership role reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer and serving as a key member of the executive finance team.
- Position Summary
- The Vice President, Controller will oversee all accounting operations across the organization and its affiliated entities.
- This individual will serve as the company's accounting leader and technical accounting expert, responsible for financial reporting, consolidations, internal controls, audit management, compliance, and accounting integration activities related to mergers and acquisitions.
- The ideal candidate is both strategic and hands-on—someone capable of operating at an executive level while remaining actively involved in day-to-day accounting operations.
- This role requires deep technical accounting expertise, experience within private equity-backed organizations, and a proven ability to build scalable processes and controls in a high-growth environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Accounting Leadership & Financial Reporting
- Lead all accounting operations across the company and affiliated entities.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for U.S. GAAP, accounting policies, and financial reporting requirements.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and oversee consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, cost center structure, entity consolidations, and intercompany accounting processes.
- Ensure accurate accounting treatment and compliance across all business activities.
- Internal Controls & Compliance
- Design and implement scalable financial and operational controls capable of meeting public-company and Sarbanes-Oxley-level standards.
- Establish and monitor policies that safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Maintain compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and reporting requirements.
- Partner with leadership to continuously strengthen the company's control environment.
- Audit, Tax & Regulatory Oversight
- Lead all external audit activities and serve as the primary liaison with independent auditors.
- Ensure timely completion of audits while achieving clean audit opinions.
- Support federal, state, and local tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax, property tax, and income tax reporting.
- Partner with external tax advisors on strategic tax planning initiatives.
- Collaborate with the CFO on transfer pricing methodologies and intercompany tax structures.
- Revenue Recognition & Technical Accounting
- Partner with business leaders to ensure revenue recognition practices comply with GAAP requirements.
- Evaluate complex accounting matters and provide guidance on technical accounting issues.
- Defend accounting positions and GAAP applications with external auditors and stakeholders.
- Treasury & Working Capital Management
- Oversee Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, General Ledger, and related accounting functions.
- Optimize working capital through effective management of cash flow, receivables, and payables.
- Monitor financial performance and provide insights to support strategic decision-making.
- Mergers & Acquisitions
- Support acquisition due diligence activities and accounting assessments.
- Lead post-acquisition accounting integration efforts.
- Develop scalable accounting processes to support future growth through acquisitions.
- Ensure successful integration of financial systems, reporting structures, and internal controls.
- Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting organization.
- Establish performance expectations and professional development plans.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and results-oriented culture across a distributed workforce.
- Effectively manage remote employees across multiple locations and time zones.
- Strategic Partnership
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CFO and executive leadership team.
- Translate complex financial concepts into actionable business insights for both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Support strategic planning, growth initiatives, and operational excellence programs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- CPA certification strongly preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant public accounting experience.
- Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing all core accounting functions, including:
- Financial reporting
- General ledger accounting
- Accounts payable and receivable
- Payroll
- Audit management
- Budgeting and forecasting support
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience leading complex entity consolidations and intercompany accounting.
- Prior experience within a private equity-backed portfolio company environment (required).
- Advanced proficiency with Excel, financial systems, reporting tools, and accounting software platforms.
- Experience managing geographically dispersed or fully remote accounting teams.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active CPA license.
- Significant public accounting background with progression into corporate accounting leadership.
- Experience supporting M&A due diligence, transaction accounting, and post-acquisition integration.
- Experience preparing organizations for public-company-level reporting and control requirements.
- Familiarity with ERP implementations, system upgrades, and financial technology optimization.
- Experience working in rapidly scaling, high-growth organizations.
