About the role
The Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (COO) position at Houston Methodist West Hospital is responsible for multiple departments under the leadership of the CEO. This role provides strategic direction and operational oversight, focusing on improving performance and aligning with Houston Methodist's mission, vision, and values.
Responsibilities
- Provides direction to management team to enable the effective and efficient completion of objectives.
- Develops and implements strategic and operational projects and processes.
- Ensures alignment of departments' operational and capital budgets with the organization's strategic plan.
- Drives HM service standards and activities to impact system score for patient/customer-based satisfaction.
- Leverages relationships with vendors and partners to obtain cost-efficient contracts.
- Identifies and leverages human capital to achieve organizational goals and business strategy.
- Reviews levels of service and significant trends that impact the effectiveness of delivering patient care.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Develops and deploys succession plans and succession plans.
- Represents Houston Methodist at community or professional organization meetings.
- Conducts conversations with direct report management on their My Development plan.
- Develops assigned service line plans with appropriate hospital and system staff, implementing and aligning strategies with the hospital's overall strategic plan.
- Researches and identifies new business opportunities, seeking innovative tools and methods to meet/exceed strategic initiatives of the organization.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration (MHA), or Master Business Administration (MBA).
- At least ten years of directly related leadership experience with at least eight years in a management role within an acute care, public, and/or academic healthcare system.
- Proven record of successful strategic planning, developing long-range goals, and implementation.
- Executive or senior leadership experience preferred.

- Possesses the vision and the sensitivity to sustain a cultural transformation process consistent with the mission and values of Houston Methodist.
- Able to lead teams/facilitate groups, build consensus, and garner highest confidence in professionalism and work product by senior leadership.
- Proficient in spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software.
- Able to function as a mentor/coach with a collaborative style; can develop, nurture, and encourage staff to embrace change and improve the organization.
