About the role
The person in this position will primarily provide advice and counsel on a wide variety of traditional labor issues arising from the day-to-day operations of a growing, complex public company in a heavily regulated environment. This role is part of a cross-functional team focused on creating new strategies to support teammates and drive efficiencies while ensuring DaVita leads as the Partner and Employer of Choice.
Responsibilities
- Draft, implement, and own the Company’s short, medium, and long-term labor legal strategy.
- Set enterprise-wide labor law priorities, align legal strategy with business objectives, and ensure consistent execution across regions, functions, and business units.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to senior executives by translating complex labor risk into practical business options, recommendations, and decision points.
- Provide expert-level legal guidance across the Company, including to senior executives and the Labor Relations team, on labor relations, union campaigns, mergers and acquisitions, and matters before state agencies and the NLRB.
- Manage outside counsel strategy, staffing, budgets, motion practice, unfair labor practice proceedings, collective bargaining support, and other significant labor matters, ensuring practical, cost-effective, and business-aligned outcomes.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives with Legal, People Services, Operations, Compliance, Communications, and Labor Relations to anticipate labor risk, resolve complex issues, and drive durable business solutions.
- Lead training regarding Federal and California labor-related workplace issues.
- Advise senior management and business units on labor compliance and risk management to accomplish business objectives without undue risk and in alignment with the Company’s long-term strategy.
- Develop, mentor, and provide direction to legal and business partners supporting labor matters, including building capability, judgment, and readiness to manage complex labor issues.
- Design and maintain governance processes, escalation protocols, and risk frameworks for significant labor matters, including union activity, unfair labor practice charges, collective bargaining, and labor-related agency proceedings.
- Keep senior management informed of significant NLRB decisions, legislation, and rulings that may affect the Company’s business or policy.
- Develop a thorough understanding of the Company's business, its people, markets, facilities, customers, and competitors to identify trends and formulate appropriate strategies.
- Establish rapport and working relationships with teammates at all levels to encourage proactive use of in-house legal counsel.
- Perform special assignments or projects.

- Travel a minimum of 25%, depending on location.
Requirements
- J.D. Degree with a minimum of 15 years of legal experience, including 10-15 years of traditional labor experience (labor relations, union campaigns, labor-related matters before state agencies and the NLRB, and collective bargaining).
- State bar qualification and good standing.
- Experience working with healthcare clients and unions (e.g., SEIU-UHW, NNU) is a plus but not required.
- Law firm experience preferred; previous in-house experience preferred.

Pay
The salary range for this role is $200,000.00 - $250,000.00 per year. Compensation depends on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience. DaVita offers a competitive total rewards package, including a 401k match, healthcare coverage, and a broad range of other benefits.
