Veterinary Technician Supervisor, Primary Care- AZ- Companion Animal Clinic

About the Role

The Veterinary Technician Supervisor supports the Companion Animal Clinic of the Animal Health Institute by leading and training a team of primary care veterinary technicians. The supervisor is responsible for fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment to meet clinic goals and benchmarks specific to primary care services. This role requires strong leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills. The Primary Care Technician Supervisor participates in direct patient care, client service, and student instruction, ensuring that patient care, doctor support, and client communication are consistently delivered with accuracy, compassion, and efficiency.

The role requires advanced technical knowledge, the ability to mentor technicians and students, and a strong commitment to supporting the education of veterinary students in a primary care setting.

Responsibilities

• Perform and oversee all duties assigned to a Primary Care Veterinary Technician, including patient care, recordkeeping, and preparation of examination, primary care surgery, dentals, and treatment areas.
• Assist in patient care and treatments as directed by workflow or doctor’s orders.
• Develop and manage staffing schedules for the primary care technician team; assign tasks to ensure clinic workflow efficiency.
• Oversee daily operations of the primary care technicians and adjust as needed to meet patient and staffing demands.
• Conduct regular check-ins with the technician team and provide constructive feedback.
• Facilitate conflict resolution and promote a positive team culture.
• Complete annual performance evaluations, supporting professional development and goal achievement for staff.
• Review and approve bi-weekly timecards using designated systems.
• Coordinate with HR on approved leave requests.
• Address and troubleshoot staff concerns, escalating issues to management as appropriate.
• Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
• Collaborate with leadership in interviewing and hiring new primary care technicians.
• Train, orient, and mentor new hires in clinical skills and university culture.
• Identify areas for improvement in patient care and deliver training for technical staff as needed.
• Assist with maintenance and monitoring of sensitive primary care equipment.
• Identify and recommend continuing education opportunities for the primary care team.
• Implement performance improvement initiatives and progressive discipline when necessary.
• Partner with clinical leadership to evaluate staffing needs related to future projects.
• Serve as a patient and student advocate.
• Contribute to student teaching and skill development alongside faculty.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position directly supervises a team of veterinary technicians with duties assigned in the Companion Animal Clinic.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and 8 years minimum experience working in an animal hospital or veterinary clinic setting required.
• CVT certification from the State of Arizona is required.
• A minimum of 3 years in a team lead or supervisory role is preferred.
• Experience working in a team environment with the ability to maintain a professional demeanor, detail orientation, and promoting a positive and inclusive culture are essential.
• Must exhibit good customer service skills and demonstrate respect at all levels of interaction.
• Must be able to work with diverse teams.
• This position may require working evenings and weekends.
• No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay, or dust.

Skills

• Know the range of services the practice provides and the species it serves.
• Be reasonably familiar with breeds and coat colors.
• Follow OSHA standards and be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets quickly.
• Know and use standard medical and business abbreviations.
• Use proper medical terminology and spelling when speaking and writing.
• Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission.
• Know the most common zoonotic diseases (infections from animals to humans).
• Ability to learn the StringSoft Veterinary management system.
• Basic proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand or sit for long periods.
• The employee must regularly use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
• The employee is required to stand and walk.
• Have the physical strength and ability to stand for long periods and be able to lift pets and objects weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance.
• Assist in lifting patients weighing more than 40 pounds.
