Job Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians as directed with diagnostic procedures and the medical, surgical, and therapeutic treatment of animals
- Absorb and administer medications, treatments, and vaccines as prescribed by veterinarians
- Perform all diagnostic tests requested by doctors
- Take and record temperature, pulses, respiration, and weight
- Collect and label specimens for culture or microscopic examination
- Perform professional dental cleanings
- Produce radiographs of diagnostic quality through accurate and consistent positioning
- Assist veterinarians in surgery by providing correct equipment and instruments and by assuring that monitoring and support equipment, such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, and breathing apparatus, are in excellent working condition
- Induce and monitor anesthesia and use anesthesia log in the medical record
- Maintain medical records and hospital logs
- Perform daily rounds with technicians and doctors
- Know emergency procedures, provide emergency resuscitation or perform other life-saving procedures
- Aid veterinarians with humane euthanasia
- Oversee the in-house laboratory, including quality of tests, inventory, and training
- Comply with DEA and OSHA regulations
- Support, respect, and collaborate with veterinarians and all other team members
Administrative Duties
- Ensure that client and staff charges are correctly invoiced
- Attend monthly doctor and supervisor meetings
- Prepare work schedules for veterinary technicians/assistants and address staffing shortages by finding coverage or personally covering shifts when required
- Plan and facilitate monthly veterinary technician/assistant department meetings, maintaining accurate records of discussions, action items, and decisions for future reference
Personnel Duties
- Assist with developing and implementing a phase-training program for new hires and conduct 30 and 90-day reviews
- Lead in the organization of regular training sessions for technicians and veterinary assistants
- Review the performance and salaries of technicians and veterinary assistants with a quarterly coaching session and written annual review
- Maintain the confidentiality of salaries, performance reviews, and all other personal information shared by employees
- Coverage of shifts when required
- Coordinate internship programs with area schools
Physical Obligations
- Able to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds
- Able to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
- Endure sitting, standing, and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods
- Demonstrate proficiency in computer systems and Practice Information Management Software (PIMS)
- Possess and apply knowledge of safety protocols related to toxins, pharmaceuticals, anesthetic agents, and radiation exposure
