Veterinary Technician (Licensed/Registered/Certified)
About the role
The ASPCA’s Community Medicine (CM) team provides expert veterinary care to support the welfare of animals and their people through stationary and mobile veterinary clinics in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. We help pet owners overcome barriers to care by bringing quality services directly to underserved communities and partially or fully subsidizing basic and preventive care. As the Licensed Veterinary Technician Staff and Floor Manager at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), you’ll support high-quality/high-volume spay-neuter surgery (HQHVSN) and primary pet care (PPC) for cats and dogs in ASPCA service areas and animals in the care of the rescue community.
Responsibilities
- Perform a broad range of veterinary technician functions, including venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and assistance, diagnostics, pharmacy, and patient recovery.
- Work alongside veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to support HQHVSN and PPC for cats and dogs using low-stress, gentle animal handling techniques.
- Communicate effectively with clients using a kind, nonjudgmental approach during intake, history-taking, and patient discharge.
- Oversee workflow on the clinic floor to ensure efficient use of staff time and skills, optimizing patient care daily.
- Act as a visible leader in the clinic to answer questions, make adjustments, offer support, and foster commitment to ASPCA’s mission.
- Ensure staff deliver high-quality patient care and adhere to CM’s standard operating procedures and guidelines.
- Coach nursing staff on gentle, low-stress animal handling and effective client communication.
- Monitor compliance with DEA regulations and CM protocols for controlled drugs; maintain accurate drug logs.
- Ensure staff take mandatory rest and meal breaks and adhere to time and attendance guidelines.
- Train and onboard new nursing team members, including hands-on skills training and weekly online modules.
- Assess trainees’ progress, provide developmental feedback, and assist with training interns, residents, and students.
- Serve on the CVC Leadership Team to support a culture of kindness, respect, and teamwork through 1:1s, recognition, and performance feedback.
- Lead a culture of safety and security in the clinic; report and address safety incidents promptly.
- Assist with hiring new staff and scheduling nursing staff for optimal coverage.
- Manage team time and attendance, review time sheets, and approve time-off requests.
- Facilitate daily huddles and meet regularly with the CVC management team to provide feedback and solutions.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of veterinary science technology (2 or 4-year program) or equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department.
- Minimum five years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in small animal medicine and surgery; shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum two years of people management experience.
- Current New York State Veterinary Technician License.
- Ability to work well within a team and communicate effectively with all staff levels.
- Desire to serve clients in a kind, helpful, and nonjudgmental manner.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
- Strong interest in animal welfare and serving underserved communities.
- Excellent animal handling skills; ability to lift and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly with assistance.
- Ability to work standing for 8 or more hours.
- Fear Free® Shelter certification required within 60 days of hire.

Pay
The target hiring range for this role is $44.24 - $46.64 per hour.
Schedule
This is typically a Monday – Friday, 8-hour schedule with occasional flexibility required beyond the scheduled workday. This is an on-site position at the Community Veterinary Clinic.
