Veterinary Technician III

About the Role

This position requires skilled technical work assisting in medical procedures, evaluation, triage, and treatment of shelter animals, as well as clinic operations including experience in spay, neuter, and other surgical operations. Supervisory duties include scheduling team members and monitoring work performance. Euthanasia certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Administers daily routines of veterinary technicians, including medication rounds and triage of shelter animals.
• Oversees customer service needs and works closely with Shelter Veterinarians to ensure clinic operations run efficiently.
• Prepares animals for surgery, performs pre- and post-surgical observations, reports condition changes, and maintains surgical records.
• Administers oral medication, vaccines, anesthesia, and intra-muscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous injections.
• Performs euthanasia and records, controls, and maintains security of federally restricted drugs and barbiturates.
• Answers public questions concerning medical problems and laws relating to Animal Control in the community.
• Engages volunteers to support veterinary duties and programs.
• Handles animals and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
• Performs other department-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Knowledge of humane methods of care, restraint, and handling of animals, as well as techniques used in their care and feeding.
• Knowledge of basic procedures used in animal control and animal control regulations.
• Familiarity with animal shelter veterinary clinic operations.
• Ability to recognize and identify breeds and behavioral characteristics of animals.
• Knowledge of veterinary medical and surgical practices, procedures, and laboratory techniques.
• Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public and lead others in a team environment.
• Ability to maintain records, compile statistical reports, and manage inventory of supplies, including controlled medications.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
• Four (4) years of experience working in a veterinary hospital or clinic performing duties outlined above.
• Two (2) years of experience working as a Lead Vet Tech or Supervisor in a veterinary setting preferred.
• Experience handling animals in a shelter environment preferred.

Certifications

• Valid Florida driver’s license.
• Valid Florida Veterinary Medical Technician Certification.
• Ability to obtain State certification in euthanasia procedures within six (6) months of hire.
• Must have phone in service within 30 days of employment.

Physical Demands

• Ability to handle animals and equipment weighing up to 80 pounds.
• Extended periods of bending, stretching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.
• Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
