The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an Internal Medicine Equine Technician to assist in diagnosing and treating complex medical conditions in horses. As a Veterinary Technician in the Equine Internal Medicine Service, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality care to horses with a variety of internal medical conditions, working closely with board-certified specialists and veterinary students to ensure each patient receives the best possible treatment. About the Service

The Equine Internal Medicine service specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of horses with a variety of clinical conditions. The service provides diagnostic evaluations, hospitalization, and intensive care management for horses needing 24-hour therapy, diagnosis and treatment of emergency conditions, and routine preventative health care. The aim is to provide outstanding care to horses and compassionate, exceptional service to their owners. The service utilizes state-of-the-art equipment for advanced diagnostics in equine patients.

This position involves direct contact with animals susceptible to rabies. Employees must complete a rabies pre-exposure vaccination series and maintain adequate rabies antibody titer (≥0.5 IU/mL) as recommended by CDC guidelines. Auburn University will cover the cost of the rabies vaccination series, periodic titer checks, and any necessary boosters.

Responsibilities

• Assist with examination, treatment, and monitoring of equine patients, including safe and effective handling and restraint of horses
• Perform and assist with diagnostic procedures such as sample collection, ultrasound, endoscopy, and radiography
• Administer medications, IV fluids, vaccinations, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians
• Continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, responses to treatment, and overall progress, providing updates to veterinarians and adjusting care as needed
• Communicate effectively with horse owners regarding their horses’ conditions, treatment plans, and care instructions
• Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including patient histories, treatment plans, and billing charges
• Work collaboratively with veterinary students, interns, and other staff to provide comprehensive care and support educational activities
• Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of medical equipment, treatment areas, and general hospital facilities

Qualifications

• Level II: Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field and 2 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals
• Level III: Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology or a related field and 4 years of experience in Veterinary Technology or in the care and comfort of animals

Minimum License and Certifications: Active license with the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Veterinary Technician, OR have met all requirements to become licensed in the State of Alabama. Licensure must be obtained within 6 months of hire date.

Substitutions Allowed For Experience: When a candidate has the required education but lacks the required experience, they may apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
