About the role
This is an entry level Veterinary Technician position that requires the employee to be sufficiently knowledgeable and self-reliant to perform a number of veterinary and research activities.
Responsibilities
- Follow all Altasciences Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and is compliant with GLP, ALCOA+, USDA, and AAALAC.
- Participate in animal health duties, including examination/treatment of animals under the guidance of APC veterinarians and maintain animal health records.
- Performs routine quality control on all paperwork and performs computer entry and/or data retrieval as appropriate.
- Performs routine diagnostic/screening tests and veterinary procedures (such as body weights, body condition score (BCS), fecal examination, blood collection, dose administration, sample processing, and tissue collection).
- Provides surgical support by preparing patients, medications, and equipment for surgery, and monitoring animals while under anesthesia. May assist in surgical procedures and/ or advanced diagnostic/treatment procedures.
- Performs general housekeeping duties such as surgical sanitation, study set-up, study clean-up, equipment maintenance and validation, and organization of vet spaces.
- Performs dose calculations for medications to be given based on initial orders from a veterinarian or as per SOP or Protocol and may be responsible for ordering substances from the pharmacy for planned procedures.
- Proficient in working with core animal species, ensuring the correct handling, restraint, and manipulation of sedated and non-sedated animals for essential procedures.
- Contributes to data collection, aiming to achieve high data quality.
- Aids Research Associates, Post-Life, and/or Labs and participates in weekend and evening rotations, as needed.
Requirements
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree with experience in clinical or research setting.
- Applicable state licensing for Veterinary technician (CVT/LVT/RVT); or high school diploma/GED with one year of relevant experience preferred.
- Equivalent combination of experience my substitute for education.
- 6-12 months basic animal handling and /or basic medical/veterinary experience.
- It is desirable to be working toward the AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification level or equivalent.
- State Veterinary Technician License is preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
- The ability to quickly understand and act on complex instructions delivered either verbally or in writing, and the ability to communicate either verbally or in writing with a wide variety of individuals in a professional, respectful, and clear manner.
- Requires the ability to accurately calculate doses.
- Possesses foundational skills in anesthetic monitoring and surgical preparation.
- Demonstrates mid-level proficiency in animal handling and procedural skills.
- Exhibits a basic understanding of general medical principles and practices.
- Basic animal handling.
