Veterinary Pathologist, Assistant or Associate Professor

About the Role

The Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, spanning 162 acres with forested areas, research and administration buildings, and indoor/outdoor animal housing. Our mission is to improve human health through nonhuman primate research advancing knowledge of disease causes, prevention, treatments, and cures.

This position is for a veterinary pathologist at the assistant or associate professor level within the Pathology Services Unit (PSU) of the Division of Comparative Medicine. The role provides advanced comparative pathology services to ONPRC core scientists, veterinarians, OHSU affiliates, and external investigators.

Responsibilities

• Provide diagnostic services and reports through post-mortem examinations (gross and microscopic), interpretation of clinical pathology, microbiology, and ancillary test results for research studies and clinical cases.
• Communicate findings clearly with research staff and veterinarians.
• Support the ONPRC research mission through research-directed post-mortem examinations, study design, research pathology interpretation, and provision of tissues via the Tissue Distribution Program.
• Identify new disease entities and characterize well-recognized diseases in nonhuman primates (NHPs).
• Perform gross and microscopic post-mortem evaluations of NHPs and other laboratory animals, including wildlife species (less than 5% of caseload).
• Characterize spontaneous NHP diseases as potential models for human diseases and diseases relevant to laboratory NHP colonies.
• Train pre- and post-graduate veterinarians through externships, residency programs, and support of a post-graduate training position in NHP pathology via one-on-one teaching and lectures.
• Serve as a local and national resource for NHP pathology expertise through teaching, publications, presentations, and contributions to the NPRC Primate Pathology Image Database.
• Perform additional duties as needed to fulfill the unit’s mission.

Requirements

• D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from an AVMA-listed veterinary school.
• Three years of diagnostic pathology experience (may include post-DVM residency training).
• ACVP or ECVP board eligibility in Anatomic Pathology.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a pathology-related field.
• Experience providing pathology support for comparative research and/or 6 months of clinical veterinary experience.
• NHP pathology experience.
• Management experience.
• ACVP or ECVP board certification in Anatomic Pathology.

Additional Details

Work is performed in a laboratory setting with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, human and monkey tissue (including agents infectious to humans such as Macacine herpesvirus 1), other biohazardous agents, and dry ice. Some work is conducted at Animal Biosafety Level 3. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
