Veterinary Extern - General Practice
About the role
An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.
Responsibilities
- Gain experience in gathering patient histories
- Perform physical exams
- Create treatment plans
- Diagnose using available diagnostic tools
- Provide dental services
- Assist or perform surgical procedures under supervision
- Manage medical cases
- Practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Requirements
We are a busy rural GP practice with a diversity of clients. We emphasize practical quality medicine and strive to give the best possible service to every client at their budgetary needs.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled veterinary students
- Must be in the clinical portion of their education
- Eligible for a travel/living expense stipend
Skills
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Attention to detail
Benefits
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in various aspects of veterinary practice. They will also have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences at Ridge Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules.
