The externship at North Country Veterinary Services was exceptional and I learned so much as a 4th year veterinary student during the 8 weeks I was there. The externship offered me an opportunity to learn new skills and each veterinarian taught me skills that I am currently using in my fourth-year rotations. The environment at North Country Veterinary Services is welcoming and fosters dialogue which is paramount for learning and communication.

Responsibilities

• Learn new skills under the supervision of veterinarians
• Conduct physical exams
• Make diagnoses (under veterinarian supervision)
• Monitor anesthesia during surgeries
• Participate in spay and neuter surgeries as the primary surgeon
• Gain experience with managing clinical cases
• Participate in anesthesia & surgery
• Complete medical records
• Work with veterinarians to diagnose and create a treatment plan
• Learn more about rural practices and the importance of client communication
• Participate in dairy herd checks
• Treat lameness
• Give IM injections
• Collect blood from horses
• Perform equine physical exams

Qualifications

All Veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount for North Country Veterinary Services – Oswego is $1,000.
