About the role

The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Core Laboratory, working closely with various entities to support animal and human health. The WVDL is based in Madison and serves primarily ruminant species, poultry, and companion animals, with a focus on necropsies, histopathology, and ancillary testing.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in necropsy and biopsy service, ensuring high-quality results and adherence to quality assurance and safety procedures.
  • Read and interpret transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) IHC slides as needed.
  • Contribute to other WVDL duties and committee activities as required.
  • Communicate with referring veterinarians, livestock producers, and other clients on issues related to infectious and reportable diseases, diagnostic planning, and herd/flock management.
  • Teach and consult with animal health professionals, producer groups, clients, and students or residents, and collaborate with state and federal animal health regulators/officers.
  • Engage in university, state, or national public service activities related to veterinary medicine, laboratory science, animal health, or production enhancement.

Requirements

  • Board certification through ACVP, AAAP, or ECVP is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated experience and aptitude in mammalian and avian diagnostic pathology and disease investigation.
  • Experience and interest in bovine pathology is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience coordinating and interpreting ancillary testing, such as molecular testing, bacteriology, virology, toxicology, etc.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience and demonstrated interest, aptitude, and capability in mammalian and avian diagnostic pathology and disease investigation.
  • Experience and interest in bovine pathology is desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience coordinating and interpreting ancillary testing, such as molecular testing, bacteriology, virology, toxicology, etc.

Skills

Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, technical staff, and clients.

Benefits

Depending on qualifications, compensation ranges from $115,000 annually (12 month).
