About the role
The Select Genetics Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Raeford, location) is seeking a full-time Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Technician. This position works closely with veterinarians, laboratory professionals, turkey growers, and other industry personnel to support accurate and timely diagnostic testing.
Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with necropsies and sample collection
- Set up, read, and interpret bacterial cultures and sensitivities
- Perform ELISA serology testing
- Conduct PCR testing procedures
- Perform Salmonella enrichment and isolation procedures
- Prepare laboratory media and reagents
- Prepare testing supplies and maintain inventory
- Receive, label, and process diagnostic samples
- Accurately record and report laboratory results in a timely manner
- Assist with sample collection from field locations when needed
- Assist in research trials and special diagnostic projects
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization
- Sanitize and disinfect equipment and work areas according to protocols
- Follow all biosecurity, animal welfare, and safety regulations
- Work productively in a team environment and assist in other areas as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Company Veterinarian or Lab Manager
- Maintain accurate and timely laboratory records and documentation
- Ensure all testing procedures are performed according to established protocols
- Maintain proper handling, storage, and disposal of biological samples and chemicals
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Laboratory Technology, Microbiology, or related field preferred
- Previous experience in animal agriculture, veterinary medicine, laboratory technology, or poultry industry strongly desired
- Familiarity with anatomical terminology and basic poultry anatomy/physiology preferred
- Experience with ELISA, PCR, bacterial culture techniques, and laboratory equipment preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Proficient reading and writing skills in English required
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to successfully work with live animals and biological specimens
- Ability to lift 25 pounds or more as needed
- Willingness to work extended hours when necessary
Qualifications
- Regular exposure to biological materials, chemicals, and laboratory reagents
- Exposure to dust, odors, and temperature variations
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and repetitive hand use
- Frequent use of laboratory equipment including microscopes, pipettes, centrifuges, incubators, and PCR equipment
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, lab coat, boots, safety glasses, and face mask
