Veterinary Assistant, Surgery
Position Overview
Valley Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center is a 24/7 award‑winning veterinary hospital seeking a dedicated Veterinary Assistant. The newly renovated 13,000+ sq ft facility features state‑of‑the‑art equipment such as digital radiography and endoscopy to provide the highest level of emergency and critical care.
Location: Winchester, VA – Full‑time, 3 × 12‑hour shifts per week.
Responsibilities
- Properly restrain animals.
- Obtain a thorough history from pet owners.
- Accurately measure and record each patient’s weight and basic vitals (temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate).
- Assist in anesthesia induction and patient preparation for surgical procedures.
- Clean and prep surgical packs and supplies; efficiently set up, turn over, and break down OR and prep areas.
- Understand triage and follow hospital policies regarding critical patients.
- Using aseptic techniques, draw up injections for doctors or technicians to administer.
- Properly package and store samples as needed.
- Assist with routine exam‑room procedures and monitor patients’ behavior.
- Maintain a positive attitude, work collaboratively as a team, and perform well under pressure.
- Multitask and produce efficiently under a heavy workload.
- Assist in maintaining inventory and alert the supervisor of low‑stock items.
- Maintain adequate inter‑departmental communications regarding patient care and client issues.
