Veterinary Assistant - Surgery
About the role
Skylos Sports Medicine, a BluePearl Veterinary Partner, is seeking a highly motivated and team-oriented Veterinary Assistant to join our dedicated team in Frederick, MD. Located in Ellicott City and Frederick, Maryland, Skylos Sports Medicine specializes in orthopedic and rehabilitation services.
Responsibilities
- Assist across services during primary service downtime or as directed by supervisor/manager.
- Remain current on RECOVER CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician.
- Support clinician and technician throughout euthanasia process, if needed.
- Appropriately restrain feline and canine patients in accordance with AVMA policies and procedures.
- Compassionately, calmly, and gently approach and handle patients.
- Demonstrate proper use of hospital PPE; adhere to safety committee or hospital standards, including Hazardous Drug Handling.
- Use radiology software and assist with radiography using proper technique and PPE, following ALARA principles.
- Use practice management software to maintain client and patient records according to hospital protocols.
- Communicate with owners effectively, obtaining patient updates and relaying the clinician’s recommendations clearly and accurately.
- Able to set up intravenous fluids. Ability to disconnect and connect patient from intravenous fluids aseptically.
- Absorb and administer nursing care to hospitalized patients.
- Able to obtain accurate patient history and follow appropriate line of questioning during appointments.
- Perform common in-house laboratory diagnostics.
- Understand basic pharmacology of commonly-used oral medications, including handling, labelling and dispensing.
- Able to transport non-critical patients for client visitation or discharge.
- Set up oxygen cages.
- Clean, sterilize, and maintain medical instruments.
Requirements
Experience with veterinary equipment and procedures is preferred but not required. Must have a strong work ethic and be able to work independently and as part of a team. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with a valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Previous experience in a veterinary setting is preferred but not required.

Pay
$20.30 - $28.00 / hour, dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool.
Schedule
Tues-Fri, 8am-6pm.
