Veterinary Assistant_OR/Anesthesia
About the role
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Veterinary Assistant to serve both Large and Small Animal Anesthesia as well as the Operating Room (OR), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Endoscopy on a rotational basis. This position prepares for cases by securing surgical instruments, preparing patients, and performing clean-up tasks.
Responsibilities
Anesthesia Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and stock of Small Animal Anesthesia prep areas and recovery.
- Clean cages, maintain laundry, clean endotracheal tubes, stock wall lockers in prep room, organize monitor cords, etc.
- Set up and take down anesthesia case stations, clean machines, monitors and gurneys, transfer patients to recovery after patient is extubated.
- Absorb anesthesia case management including restraining patients, applying monitoring equipment, recording vitals on anesthesia record, all under the direct supervision of an LVT or DVM.
OR/Floater Responsibilities:
- Maintain cleanliness and stock of SA OR, Endo, IR, Procedure rooms and enter patient charges.
- Ensure cleaning list is completed.
- Set up and clean after procedures.
- Circulate Surgery cases.
- Assist with stock and checking for expired supplies.
- Rotate through all Areas including Anesthesia providing assistance where needed.
- Scrub into cases to provide assistance in setting up and draping in for the procedure.
- Shave and prep patients in SA Anesthesia prior to procedures.
Endoscopy/Interventional Radiology Responsibilities:
- Scope set up specific to procedure.
- Scope cleaning.
Requirements
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Experience with animal care within Veterinary Teaching Hospital is preferred.
Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, abilities, and/or competencies including but not limited to:
- Ability to properly handle and restrain various species of animals.
- Effectively communicate.
- Organized with ability to prioritize duties based on unit needs.
- Apply good judgement to carry out instructions, deal with problems with concrete variables and draw appropriate/accurate conclusions.
Physical Demands
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
- Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
- Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
