Veterinarian Area Medical Director- San Antonio/Austin
The Area Medical Director position is critical to ensuring that our hospitals provide a positive environment for staff, patients, and clients. The primary accountabilities include:
Leading and providing management to all hospitals in the assigned area to drive hospital growth and deliver performance objectives.
Managing, developing, and providing mentorship to hospital veterinarians and hospital medical leaders through hands-on evaluation and coaching, as well as providing medical support to any relief doctors who provide doctor services.
Ensuring in-hospital evaluations for improvement in hospital flow and efficiencies.
Acting as the primary medical point of contact for all Petco-owned hospitals within the assigned area and ensuring compliance with hospital policies and procedures and with local, state, and federal laws.
Overseeing and assuring hospital radiation safety, regular equipment maintenance, and compliance programs are compliant.
Partnering with hospital DVMs and leaders to assure controlled substance compliance.
Partnering with operational leadership to manage and support escalated client concerns, including but not limited to professional liability submissions and other escalated client concerns including the potential for small claims proceedings.
Reviewing electronic medical records of direct reports regarding patient decisions and providing feedback and direction to associate veterinarians as a means to elevate patient care in our hospital.
Reviewing and analyzing key metrics to improve veterinarian production.
Ensuring hospitals maintain a positive work environment that fosters efficiency, profitability, and partner retention.
Practicing high-quality medicine on an as-needed basis.
In partnership with the Petco Talent Acquisition team, assisting in the recruitment, interview, hiring, and onboarding process.
In partnership with the Regional Medical Director and Area Operation Manager, supporting and managing the performance of the hospitals, preparing operating and capital budgets, and meeting financial objectives and budget expectations.
Frequent travel between area hospital locations with the potential of up to 20% of overnight travel (such as corporate office or conferences).
This position requires direct supervision from the assigned Senior Regional Medical Director. It involves planning and problem-solving, impacting the organization by contributing to the growth of a productive practice while focusing on a high-quality standard of care. The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal, leadership, and conflict resolution skills, as well as previous medical leadership experience preferably in a multi-unit setting.
The Area Medical Director directly supervises all veterinarians within the assigned region. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds, as necessary), and standing for long periods of time. A significant portion of the partner's time will be spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.
