About the role
The Veterans Service Officer (VSO) counsels, advises, and assists Veterans and their dependents in obtaining VA benefits provided by county, state, and federal law. VSO acts as an advocate and case manager for Veterans in need of such services.
Responsibilities
- Plans and schedules appointments in a timely and efficient manner to provide for proper claims development, submission, and evidence gathering.
- Provides assistance to Veterans and dependents in accessing Veterans services within the community and the region.
- Performs computer data entry to input Veterans information to record and retrieve Veterans official military documents, medical records, and other information pertinent to the veterans claim.
- Operates various office equipment.
- Provides assistance and/or files claims for Veterans benefits.
- Visits hospitals, nursing homes, and residences of incapacitated Veterans/claimants as needed to gather and verify information as well as discuss claims.
- Gathers pertinent case information through interviews, research, corroborate date, documentation, and regulations.
- Verifies information received as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains professional relationships with other agencies serving Veterans.
- Maintains current accreditation and knowledge of Veterans publications such as federal, state, and county information and instructions and resource material on V.A. medical centers, outpatient clinics, and their programs.
- Composes correspondence regarding inquiries on other Veterans related matters.
Qualifications
- Requires a minimum of a high school diploma, supplemented with one year experience working with the public or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform required duties.
- Must obtain accreditation as prescribed by SC Department of Veterans Affairs within a minimal timeframe.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently required to perform basic physical activities and communicate effectively to carry out essential job duties.
- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 10 lb. objects regularly.
- Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.
