Ventilation Engineer

Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste. Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO) is the managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

About the role

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is constructing a new nuclear-grade ventilation system for the underground that more than triples the current air filtration capacity. The system is designed to dilute and remove dust and noxious gases from operating diesel equipment and to generate pressure boundaries for nuclear safety, ensuring the safety of site workers. You will play a critical role in maintaining this system, which provides essential airflow to equipment operations 2,150 feet below the surface. All airflow is routed through an array of HEPA filters before being exhausted to the atmosphere.

As a system engineer, you will become the subject matter expert on the ventilation system. Your responsibilities will include developing, maintaining, and producing technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications, assisting in writing Statements of Work, managing system configuration, performing system walk-downs, and conducting engineering calculations such as shear/moment diagrams and friction loss in ducts. You will also provide technical support for maintenance activities and facility operations, and coordinate closely with other engineering, procurement, and program management disciplines.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering with zero (0) to five (5) years of relevant experience.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without SIMCO visa sponsorship now or in the future.
• Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the WIPP Site (even if teleworking, must comply with security requirements to obtain a badge).
• Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries—are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Mining Engineering.
• Experience with mine ventilation systems under MSHA (30 CFR Part 57).
• Two (2) years of experience with nuclear-grade ASME N509, N510, N511, and AG-1 systems.
• Experience working in DOE facilities.
• PLC experience.

Pay

$70,972 to $123,573 per year. The specific salary offered will be influenced by the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
