Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator on the Construction Crew performs skilled construction, maintenance, transportation, and campus support services utilizing commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment including front-end loaders, trackhoes, dump trucks, street sweepers, vac truck, forklifts, flatbeds, and snow removal equipment.
  • Perform asphalt repair and maintenance on campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and pedestrian pathways.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as compressors, asphalt saws, asphalt spray rigs, salt spreaders, and related construction equipment.
  • Support grounds, construction, utility, and maintenance projects by transporting materials, equipment, and supplies throughout campus.
  • Perform snow plowing, snow removal, and ice control operations during winter weather events and emergency response situations.
  • Operate CDL-rated vehicles in compliance with University, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct daily inspections of vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance, safety, and operational concerns.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance including lubrication, cleaning, and operational checks of assigned equipment.
  • Assist with refuse collection, storm drain maintenance, and other campus infrastructure support activities.
  • Train and assist less-experienced employees in safe equipment operation and work practices as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all safety policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires employees to be on call during periods when snow is forecast, including both day and night shifts.
  • This position requires participation in a rotating weekend on-call schedule to assist with utility interruptions and emergencies.
  • If needed, employees may be required to work holidays and support campus events, including football games, concerts, and other special events, which often occur outside normal business hours.
  • The construction team within our shop also assists the Moving Services team as needed within the department.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
  • Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels: Vehicle Operator, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
  • Heavy equipment operation and snow removal experience preferred.
  • Depends on the applicant's qualifications and experience, we are willing to provide in-house training.
  • Looking for someone who is willing to learn and adapt, as we have a wide variety of duties across campus.
  • Class A CDL preferred; minimum requirement is a Class B CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements.
  • Asphalt experience preferred, primarily involving patching and repair work.
