Job Responsibilities

Diagnoses and performs repair/replacement of parts to maintain all SCDOT equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, electrical and hydraulic systems, mowers, blades, safety chains, shields, and tires.

Aids in HMMS and other programs supporting shop operations; ensures shop certifications are met, including maintaining time sheets, work requests, and mechanic's time inputs.

Performs welding, fabrications as needed for repairs on various equipment; makes modifications to improve production, including painting and using cutting torches.

Instructs shop mechanics on safety practices, tasks, and verifies OSHA/Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) compliance, ensuring proper paperwork documentation.

Performs service calls in the field or wrecker operations to transport equipment back to the repair shop or appropriate facility.

Removes snow and ice, and responds to other inclement weather events like hurricanes and tornados.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • Two (2) years of work experience involving direct performance of job duties related to the area of employment.
  • Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

  • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Working in a large garage setting.
  • May work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
  • Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
