Vehicle / Equipment Repair Technician II (61032538)

Responsibilities

• Perform a wide variety of equipment shop activities related to diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems in motorized and specialty construction equipment.
• Diagnose, repair, or replace parts to maintain automotive gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, timing belts, and cooling systems.
• Perform wiring repairs, brake jobs, and tune-ups on vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair or replace parts on diesel-powered equipment, including engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motor graders, rollers, and AMZ machines.
• Perform preventive maintenance as required.
• Conduct welding fabrication for repairs and modifications to improve equipment production and utilization.
• Develop electric and gas welding techniques and procedures through formal and informal training.
• Use computerized test equipment to diagnose, repair, or replace parts on gasoline and diesel vehicles.
• Operate and perform testing with new-generation start testers and monitor testing equipment to diagnose problems with onboard computer systems.
• Repair or replace electrical system components such as alternators, starters, DMI, and exterior lighting.
• Maintain and repair small engines, including lawn mowers, chain saws, pole saws, edgers, and string trimmers.
• Sharpen chains for chain saws and pole saws.
• Maintain a safe and clean shop work area, ensuring compliance with OSHA and DHEC regulations.
• Repair vehicles during service calls that require immediate attention and assist in shop operations during after-hours emergencies and inclement weather.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience involving independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

• Perform essential functions involving bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work in a large garage setting, potentially in uncomfortable positions for long periods.
• May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or departmental emergencies.
• Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
