Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance Mechanic I

Nature Of Work
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanic work in the maintenance, service, and repair of vehicles and equipment, diagnosing and repairing electrical systems, transmissions, and brakes to ensure equipment and vehicles are properly maintained in safe working condition.

• Services and repairs the Town’s fleet of vehicles and equipment including employee shuttles, and law enforcement vehicles.
• Performs mechanical repairs on trucks and other fleet vehicles; operates diagnostic tools/equipment; rebuilds engines, transmissions, differentials, suspension systems, air systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brake systems and air conditioning systems in accordance with standard Department procedures and policy, safety standards.
• Repairs and maintains lawn mowers, snow blowers, compactors, and other types of light equipment.
• Performs preventative maintenance and diagnoses and repairs light equipment including snowmobiles, four wheelers, and bobcats; maintains, services, and repairs various types of light, medium and heavy equipment including backhoes, front end loaders, forklifts, and/or auxiliary power units.
• Checks vehicle/equipment fluid levels, belts, brakes, and tires; replaces parts as required; changes oil and performs general preventative maintenance tasks.
• Performs major mechanical repairs including changing transmissions, axles, clutches, and/or engines.
• Affords assistance in repairing auto body damage as required.
• Fabricates, repairs, and/or assists in constructing buildings, structures, facilities, and infrastructure.
• Operates various types of light and heavy equipment including backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, skid steers, and forklifts.
• Assists other departments with special events set up and/or traffic control.
• Cleans and maintains Maintenance Shop facilities, equipment, and tools.
• Makes preparations and maintains a variety of maintenance records and documentation.
• Acts as a liaison, when necessary, between Mountain Village and its residents and guests, subcontractors, vendors, and merchants, giving direction and assistance as needed.
• Promotes and observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures work sites as necessary; may attend safety committee meetings, actively participates in and may conduct tailgate trainings.
• Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of the team.
• Actively works to progress the Town’s goal of zero waste and carbon neutrality by minimizing unnecessary consumption (of energy, water, paper, plastic, ink, etc.), seeking environmentally preferred products (e.g., reusable, recycled content, non-fossil fuel), and supporting environmental initiatives through participation, promotion, and accurate storytelling.

Minimum Qualifications

• A High School Diploma/GED with completion of a mechanic vocational school preferred plus at least two (2) years as a mechanic in the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy/light equipment preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• A valid Colorado State Driver’s License is required and CDL A or B is desired.
• UST A/B operator certification within 1 year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• Knowledge of: Maintenance methods, practices and standards; instruments, tools and diagnostic equipment used to repair/maintain construction equipment and vehicles; various types of equipment and vehicles common to municipal operations; regulations and standards governing the maintenance of vehicles and equipment; maintenance records and documentation; safety protocols relative to handling hazardous materials; welding equipment and processes; vehicle and equipment inspection processes; safety precautions and guidelines relevant to repairing, maintaining and operating heavy equipment.
• Skill in: Conducting a variety of mechanic functions; diagnosing mechanical issues and regularly servicing vehicles and equipment; assisting in ensuring the Town’s vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe working condition; maintaining compliance with regulations governing mechanic work; preparing and maintaining accurate maintenance records; cleaning and maintaining maintenance shop facilities and equipment; safely operating heavy equipment and handling hazardous materials.
• Shows a consistent pattern of working toward, attaining and maintaining certifications that adhere to the goals of the Town’s Vehicle Maintenance team.

Environmental Factors

• Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities and external environments with exposure to inclement weather; may be exposed to frequent bending, kneeling and lifting; may be exposed to fumes, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock; the noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Factors

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to operate heavy equipment, climb under and over vehicles and equipment, and lift and/or move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
