About the Role

Conducts vascular ultrasound examinations to locate, evaluate, and record pertinent anatomical, pathological, and functional data. Reviews results for quality and completeness and refers to a physician for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Explains the ultrasound process to the patient and instructs/assists them in assuming the correct physical position for the examination.
  • Responds to patient concerns and questions, demonstrating appropriate assessment skills prior to the procedure (e.g., patient identification, clinical condition, special needs).
  • Obtains informed consent when appropriate and completes worksheets for all exams.
  • Performs ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician, seeking clarification for unclear test requests.
  • Selects appropriate equipment and technical factors to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
  • Assists radiologists during interventional procedures and performs ultrasound procedures in the operating room.
  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of vascular exams and accurate identification of anatomy and pathology.
  • Operates, troubleshoots, and performs quality control/assurance for ultrasound equipment.
  • Accurately captures and manages images using digital ultrasound equipment and the PACS system.
  • Links and associates studies per departmental policy, scans prior studies, and creates CDs as needed.
  • Performs patient tracking in radiology and hospital information systems, including chart entries.
  • Safely transports patients to and from Imaging Services.
  • Documents ultrasound procedures in accordance with department policies.
  • Processes and labels images digitally, ensuring proper storage.
  • Assists with general clerical duties, including phones, scheduling, appointments, and patient registration.
  • Provides excellent customer service, maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and prompt resolution of concerns.
  • Offers assistance to colleagues and other departments, resolving conflicts directly and respecting others' time.
  • Adheres to communication etiquette, including professional use of phones, email, and voicemail.
  • Manages self professionally, including compliance with dress code, badge visibility, and completion of mandatory education.
  • Follows all UMCAP and departmental policies, including safety, infection control, and attendance guidelines.

Requirements

  • Registry with ARDMS as a Vascular Technologist, or registry eligible (ARDMS must be obtained within one year of hire date for registry-eligible candidates).
  • Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) certification.
  • 1–3 years of experience as a vascular technologist (preferred).
  • Graduate of an accredited sonography program (preferred).
