About the Role

This position independently provides and maintains arterial line (A-line), deep venous (IV), midline catheters, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), and/or Central venous catheters (CVC), and/or Acute Hemodialysis catheter access. The role involves conducting patient assessments, obtaining consults for procedures, gathering blood values and patient information, and recommending the correct invasive catheter for therapy. Additionally, the position assists with departmental activities, serves as a specialist in quality improvement, and develops best practice guidelines. Responsibilities include hemodynamic monitoring, line maintenance, and access of invasive lines. The role also performs all Respiratory Care Practitioner duties and may supervise others if required.

Responsibilities

• Inserts and maintains arterial lines, midlines, PICC lines, and other vascular access devices according to department policy and procedures, including dressing changes, transducer changes, line reviews, flushing of ports, and de-clotting.
• Uses ultrasound technology to ensure accurate insertion of arterial lines and PICC lines.
• Reviews chest X-rays to ensure accurate placement of central venous catheters and/or uses X-ray free technology with ECG tip placement to verify central line tip placement.
• Maintains sterile field throughout insertion process, following IHI bundle compliance.
• Provides accurate, timely, and appropriate documentation into the electronic medical record.
• Reviews labs, patient history, and physician orders to determine appropriate line usage and identify potential issues.
• Collaborates with physicians to determine appropriate long-term access needs and obtains patient authorization for procedures.
• Inserts peripheral venous and/or arterial catheters to provide access or more complex vascular access as indicated.
• Performs or assists with intubations when necessary and maintains competency through observation, demonstration, and documentation.
• Dispenses pharmacological solutions as prescribed by physicians, with knowledge of indications, contraindications, and complications of aerosolized medications.
• Responds to adverse reactions and inappropriate orders according to policy and procedure.
• Utilizes assessment skills to implement protocols or initiate physician consultation, demonstrating competency in Medselect or PXYIs.
• Assists RNs in bedside procedures, takes physician’s verbal orders, and transcribes appropriately.
• Performs bag and mask ventilation, maintains airway, and assists with life-threatening events.
• Attends all resuscitations and traumas as assigned.
• Performs basic pulmonary function testing, including vital capacity, forced inspiratory/expiratory flows, flow volume loops, and peak flow maneuvers.
• Performs resting and exercise oximetry testing; some therapists perform complete pulmonary function studies including diffusion, lung volumes, body box procedures, and pulmonary stress procedures.
• Collects soiled equipment from patient areas, transports to CV Respiratory Therapy department, and cleans, disinfects, sterilizes, and packages respiratory care equipment.
• Performs minor troubleshooting of equipment and recognizes when equipment needs repair or preventative maintenance.
• Provides CV respiratory therapy services as prescribed, assists in IAPB insertion, invasive and non-invasive cardiac outputs, and maintains ISTAT and/or blood gas equipment.
• Acts as a resource to therapists and other healthcare practitioners regarding patient status, equipment, and operational issues.
• Provides excellent customer service and maintains current knowledge of new products, equipment, and technical practices.
• Provides maintenance of associated equipment and shares significant changes in standards of care with specialists, supervisors, and leadership.
• Provides training, orientation, and patient education to staff, patients, and families.
• Assists in the development of departmental policy and procedures based on best practice standards.

Requirements

• Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved Respiratory Care program (Required).
• 2 years of Respiratory Care experience (Required).
• 5 years of respiratory care experience with arterial line insertion, IV insertion, PICC and/or Central line insertion, invasive maintenance experience, and electronic medical record data entry (Preferred).

Qualifications

• Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) (Upon Hire - Required).
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (Upon Hire - Required).
• Arizona Respiratory License (Upon Hire - Required).
• Credential as NBRC Specialist or Vascular Access Specialist Certification (Preferred).
• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (Upon Hire - Required).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) (Upon Hire - Required).

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in a health care-related field (Preferred).
