Responsibilities

• Manages and intervenes appropriately for the patient with current venous access issues
• Prioritizes appropriate venous access choice for age, therapy, and any current complication’s impact on IV therapy
• Participates in practice changes resulting from performance improvement activities
• Supports departmental quality standards and initiatives
• Evaluates the need for and provides patient teaching in all aspects of the venous access specialty
• Identifies individualized plan of care based on patients’ needs related to both infusion therapy and venous access consult and intervenes appropriately
• Evaluates patients’ developmental level, identify increased physical/emotional dependency needs, and evaluate the availability of support systems consistent with assessment
• Performs and documents all procedures and assessments according to department policy
• Obtains patient assessment, evaluating diagnosis, previous medical history, existing infusion-related complications, and ordered therapy as it relates to current venous access consult
• Administers treatments and medications, interprets and verifies physician orders, and evaluates the effectiveness of interventions
• Functions appropriately in Code Blue and other clinical emergencies
• Demonstrates continuous competency in specific procedures related to venous access and infusion therapy
• Provides expert resourcing to staff nurses and other departments as consulted
• Performs other duties as assigned

• PICC Validation
• Port Validation
• Peripheral Intravenous Access Validation
• EKG (based on patient population; see document EKG and Advanced Life Support Requirements)

• Associate's of Nursing [Required]
• Bachelor's of Nursing [Preferred]
