Responsibilities
- Manages and intervenes appropriately for the patient with current venous access issues
- Prioritizes appropriate venous access choice for age, therapy, and any current complication’s impact on IV therapy
- Participates in practice changes resulting from performance improvement activities
- Supports departmental quality standards and initiatives
- Evaluates the need for and provides patient teaching in all aspects of the venous access specialty
- Identifies individualized plan of care based on patients’ needs related to both infusion therapy and venous access consult and intervenes appropriately
- Evaluates patients’ developmental level, identify increased physical/emotional dependency needs, and evaluate the availability of support systems consistent with assessment
- Performs and documents all procedures and assessments according to department policy
- Obtains patient assessment, evaluating diagnosis, previous medical history, existing infusion-related complications, and ordered therapy as it relates to current venous access consult
- Administers treatments and medications, interprets and verifies physician orders, and evaluates the effectiveness of interventions
- Functions appropriately in Code Blue and other clinical emergencies
- Demonstrates continuous competency in specific procedures related to venous access and infusion therapy
- Provides expert resourcing to staff nurses and other departments as consulted
- Performs other duties as assigned

- PICC Validation
- Port Validation
- Peripheral Intravenous Access Validation
- EKG (based on patient population; see document EKG and Advanced Life Support Requirements)
Education
- Associate's of Nursing [Required]
- Bachelor's of Nursing [Preferred]
