Vascular Access Registered Nurse

About the Role

Supports the department by facilitating the delivery of professional, specialized nursing care related to IV therapy and enteral nutrition for the comfort and well-being of patients. Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide care, education, and teaching related to vascular access needs and enteral nutrition. Implements medically prescribed interventions related to IV therapy and enteral nutrition in defined populations, including Mission, Mission member hospitals, and other organizations where Mission’s services and care are provided.

Performs placement of enteral feeding tubes for patients utilizing an electronic feeding tube placement system. Prepares patients for enteral feeding tube placement procedures according to manufacturer’s guidelines, evidence-based practices, and Mission policies.

Responsibilities

• Perform difficult peripheral access on patients with limited vein access.
• Provide central venous catheter care and maintenance, including dressing and needleless connector changes.
• Troubleshoot central venous catheter occlusions and administer FDA-approved fibrinolytic drugs to restore catheter function.
• Insert PICCs using real-time ultrasound and PICC tip location systems.
• Cross-train to insert midline catheters in both adult and pediatric populations.
• Cross-train to insert PICCs in pediatric populations.
• Cross-train to provide vascular access services to the surrounding community, affiliate hospitals, or other facilities as needed.
• Cross-train to insert feeding tubes using a feeding tube tip confirmation system.
• Cross-train to troubleshoot enteral feeding tube issues.
• Collect data and measure outcomes for all vascular access and enteral feeding tube procedures (preferred).

Qualifications

• Required Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing.
• Preferred Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cortrak training course for inserting enteral feeding tubes.
• Required License/Certifications:
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • eNLC (Enhanced Nurse License Compact) license may apply; licensee should confirm with NCBON.
  • BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
• Preferred License/Certifications: National Certification VA-BC (Vascular Access Board Certification) or CRNI (Certified Registered Nurse Infusion) within two years of hire.
• Required Experience:
  • Experience as a Vascular Access specialist.
  • Experience in central venous catheter care and maintenance.
  • PICC insertion experience using real-time ultrasound and PICC tip location systems.
• Preferred Experience: Experience in data collection and measuring outcomes for vascular access and enteral feeding tube procedures.
