Variable Hour Jail Deputy
About the role
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to fill Variable Hour Jail Deputy (VHJD) positions. These positions work a variety of roles in the Court Complex, the Law Enforcement Center (LEC), and the Jail. They include various transports to the Oregon State Hospital and other medical facilities.
Responsibilities
- Escort Adults in Custody (AIC) to and from court appearances and provide law enforcement services at the Courthouse.
- Facilitate court appearances for AIC both in person and virtually via computer video interface.
- Facilitate and conduct prisoner transports to and from adult or juvenile detention facilities, and the Oregon State Hospital.
- Work closely with a multitude of professionals through the various partners of the justice system.
- Write both criminal and disciplinary reports.
- Make arrests, serve warrants, testify in court, investigate crimes in the courthouse, and develop probable cause incident to arrest.
- Assist in the jail during peak activity periods or when court needs are reduced.
- Participate in on-going division level training in line with certified FTEs (Patrol and Corrections).
- Participate in Court Security related training as outlined in CALEA standards for semi-annual Court Security Specific training.
- Perform searches of the building and on AIC’s, including pat, frisk and strip searches.
- Perform welfare rounds where AIC are present.
- Absorb new arrestee/remands including entering information in the jail management system, completing fingerprints and booking photos.
- VHJD may participate in Out of State Extraditions.

- Currently possess a Basic Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training “DPSST” certification OR other equivalent local, state or federal certification as a Corrections Officer/Jail Deputy or Police Officer/Sheriff's Patrol Deputy;
- Have completed a Field Training Program;
- Have at least one year of full-time equivalent (2080 hours) work experience as a Corrections Officer/Jail Deputy or Police Officer/Sheriff's Patrol Deputy. Completion of required work experience must not have occurred greater than 12 months prior to the date of application submission.
Qualifications
- Must be eligible for certification in first aid and breathalyzer examination through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
- Must attain a passing score on the practical firearms course.
- Must possess a driver’s license valid in the State of Oregon and have an acceptable driving record.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Not less than 20/200 in one (1) or both eyes, corrected 20/20 in both eyes.
- Must pass a medical exam, drug screen and psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
Skills
VHJD activities involve prolonged standing, sitting, and/or sudden rapid response to active incidents occurring in and around the court complex.
Benefits
Washington County will provide a $500 per pay period stipend intended to roughly cover medical insurance premiums. The stipend is contingent on the employee meeting a minimum number of hours worked per pay period.
Pay
Pay Range: $41.22 - $52.64 Hourly
Schedule
Variable Hour positions are at-will and hours are limited to twenty (20) hours per week averaged over a three (3) month period.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is a full-service law enforcement agency located in Hillsboro, Oregon, serving the residents of the county's urban and rural areas. WCSO enhances public safety by fostering professionalism, compassion, and trust within its team and the communities it serves. WCSO is the primary first responder for unincorporated residents, offering services from routine patrol and crime investigation to specialized teams. The WCSO also operates the county’s only jail and provides services to cities within the county on a contract basis.

Background Check
The selected finalist(s) for this position must be able to pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office. The background Investigation for this position typically take 6-8 weeks to complete so you will want to plan accordingly. The information that will be required when you complete the Personal History Statement includes, but is not limited to: Employment Information (past 10 years or back to age 17; 3 co-workers will be requested from each past employer), Residential Information (past 10 years or back to age 17), Financial Information, References (6 without using the same people as coworker or supervisor references), Family Member Information, Driving History, Past/Present Drug Use and/or Controlled Substances, Criminal History - Must be free of conviction of a felony crime. Dishonorable or undesirable discharge from the military normally means disqualification.
