Van Driver - Substitute (2026-2027 School Year)

Responsibilities

• Obeys all traffic laws, specifically those pertaining to school vehicles
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for buses including but not limited to child safety equipment (i.e. car seats, booster seats, safety vests)
• Maintains discipline when students are on the bus
• Reports disciplinary issues and concerns to the proper authority
• Keeps assigned van clean
• Checks van before each operation for mechanical defects
• Notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness
• Discharges students only at authorized stops
• Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips
• Transports only authorized students
• Reports all accidents and completes required reports
• Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the van
• Ability to safely evacuate all passengers in an emergency vehicular situation including but not limited to passengers ranging from ages three to twenty-one, in adherence with the procedures outlined in the Transportation Employee Handbook

Qualifications

• High School diploma; preference given to those having a minimum of two years college
• Previous experience with children preferred
• Valid current Pennsylvania state driver’s license must be maintained at all times
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
• Ability to write simple correspondence
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
• The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and taste or smell
• The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with the ability to safely evacuate all passengers
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions
• The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
• Must successfully complete and maintain compliance with all federal and state background and criminal record check requirements
