Essential Job Functions
- Responsible for the safe operation of NorthStar vehicles.
- Pick up and deliver students to NorthStar in an efficient manner, per a set daily schedule.
- Operates 10, 12, or 15-passenger van safely and efficiently, following a designated route, abiding by all federal, state, and local laws, and transportation policies defined in the NorthStar Transportation Manual.
- Takes attendance of youth before or once aboard the vehicle.
- Sure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers.
- Maintain order and discipline on the vehicle.
- Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary issues.
- Conduct pre-trip vehicle inspections, perform vehicle walk-through and walk-around before and after each trip.
- Track daily mileage in vehicle logbook.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance inspection of vehicle including routine cleaning.
- Advises the Facility Manager of any requirements for maintenance or repairs. Report same day as to any vehicle issues or damage.
- Maintain focus while driving, requiring intense concentration.
- Return vehicle to assigned spot at end of route, perform final inspection, and secure vehicle according to procedures.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- A valid Nebraska driver’s license is required and the ability to pass pre-employment background screening with acceptable driving record.
- Minimum 21 years of age and must have three or more years of driving experience.
- Candidate should not have any DUI, DWI, or similar alcohol or drug related offenses within the past five years.
- Ability to operate a 15-passenger van.
- High School diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
- Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to learn accurately and quickly, local street and road systems.
- Prior experience driving school aged children or multiple passengers is preferred.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe and violation-free driving record.
- Knowledge of all driving laws and regulations.
- Experience and comfort driving in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, extreme cold and heat.
- Strong communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with school aged children.
- Maintain a high energy level.
- Regularly speak clearly and hear the spoken word.
Physical And Environmental Conditions
- Duties are performed in both outdoor and indoor settings.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for several hours daily.
- The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
- This includes the pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
