About the role
The Vactor Truck Laborer is responsible for performing tasks necessary for the operation of the Vactor truck and the routine maintenance of the storm drain system. This individual will assist the working supervisor in other related duties. The Vactor Truck Laborer performs fieldwork on the storm drain system and generally in the right-of-way on streets and roads. Work involves driving with the Vactor Truck Operator, lifting sections of manhole covers, contact with hazardous materials, close proximity to heavy equipment, and confined space entry.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Vactor Truck Operator with operating and preventive maintenance on Vactor truck and other related equipment
- Clean (rod and vacuum) storm drain lines, manholes, and catch basins
- Position and operate vacuum boom to remove debris
- Identify needed repairs to sanitary sewer lines, manholes, and catch basins
- Assist in flow monitoring, dye tests, and smoke tests
- Report to the working supervisor any problems with the equipment and/or facilities that need attention
- Have daily contact with the public
- Perform other work as assigned
Requirements
- Maintain regular and prompt attendance; physically present to work
- Perform after-hours work as required (nights and weekends)
- May perform work on weekends; standby is required
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- One (1) to three (3) months related experience and/or training
- Valid Texas Driver License required
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record
- May be required to obtain additional certifications depending on job assignment
Skills
- Communicate effectively in writing for documentation purposes
- Understand written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents
- Ability to detect malfunctions in storm drains
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, safety guidelines, and equipment manuals
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor under varying weather conditions
Physical Requirements
- Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact (see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls)
- Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling
- Work outdoors in different climates
- Ability to lift up to 50-60 lbs
- Must be able to be on call for 24 hours while on standby duty
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, or special events when necessary
- The work may occasionally require entry and exit from confined spaces
Pay
$12.85 per hour
