About the role

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position, with an expected start date of August 1, 2025. We are particularly interested in scholars researching ethnicity, migration, and critical race theory in Modern Europe, with a preference for those focusing on graphic narratives.

The successful candidate’s research and teaching interests will focus on topics such as refugee studies, migration ecologies, climate or political displacement, public history and policies, European imperial history and settler states, and/or comparative race and ethnic studies within critical discourse studies, critical media studies, and/or literary and cultural studies. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in digital humanities, particularly computational methods, data visualization, and big data approaches in literary and cultural criticism. Candidates with experience in translation practice and studies who may contribute to our graduate program in Global Communication and Translation are also of interest.

Responsibilities

• Teach language courses at all levels of instruction in both English and one of the target languages (French, German, Russian, or Spanish).
• Develop and teach courses related to research expertise in ethnicity, migration, and critical race theory in Modern Europe.
• Contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Center for the Arts in Society, Humanities@CMU, the Center for Black European Studies and the Atlantic, and the Kenner Room for immersive technologies in language and culture research and teaching.

Requirements

• PhD in a relevant field (required by start date; ABD considered).
• Demonstrated record of scholarship and teaching on Modern Europe in dialogue with the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.
• Evidence of experience in second language instruction in French, German, Russian, or Spanish.
• Significant evidence of a promising scholarly agenda and teaching excellence.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and professional practice.

Qualifications

• Expertise in digital humanities, computational methods, data visualization, or big data approaches in literary and cultural criticism (preferred).
• Experience in translation practice and studies (preferred).
