Description

The UXO Technician I identifies and classifies unexploded ordnance (UXO) and discarded military munitions (DMM) and their fuses as well as excavates and moves munitions determined to be acceptable for movement. The UXO Technician I must be able to perform the responsibilities of a UXO Sweep Personnel.

Expected Outcomes

  • Reconnoiter and classify UXO and DMM.
  • Identify all types of military munitions, including possible fuses and their condition. This may include bombs, guided missiles, projectiles, rockets, land mines and associated components, pyrotechnic items, military explosives, demolition materials, grenades and submunitions.
  • Excavate subsurface UXO and DMM.
  • Move and consolidate UXO and DMM that have been determined acceptable for movement within Munitions Response Site (MRS) or Munitions Response Area (MRA).
  • Transport demolition materials and UXO and DMM that have been determined safe for transport over public roads.
  • Prepare electric and non-electric firing systems for demilitarization operations.
  • Operate personnel decontamination stations.
  • Assist in the inspection of Material Potentially Presenting an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH) for the presence of explosive hazards.
  • Construct UXO related protective works.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High School diploma.
  • Graduate of formal UXO training course of instruction, or Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) assistant courses required.
  • Divers conducting underwater detection and identification of munitions must have completed both the basic and the underwater portions of Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal (NAVSCOLEOD) training (or foreign equivalent).
  • Problem Sensitivity — The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
  • Deductive Reasoning — The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Performing General Physical Activities — Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Identifying Objects, Actions, and Events — Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  • Operate Equipment – Utilizing detection equipment and geophysical sensing equipment to locate UXOs; transport non-hazardous materials using a variety of types of equipment and vehicles.

Skill Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Formal UXO training course of instruction or EOD assistant courses.
  • Underwater detection and identification training.

Physical Requirements

  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

Salary Range

  • $53,320 - $70,153 - $86,776
