The Utility Person leads the crew and assists in performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of natural gas infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Oversee crew activities, providing direction and guidance regarding work assignments, task execution, and safety practices.
• Perform skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
• Assist in and provide direction for the installation, connection, and disconnection of meters (large displacement, orifice, domestic, commercial, and industrial); conduct required inspections and tests of commercial and residential facilities.
• Assist in and provide direction for the installation of gas regulating and measuring stations.
• Assist in and provide direction for laying new and replacement mains, making service connections, and installing service lines on low, intermediate, and high-pressure pipelines.
• Assist in and provide direction for repairs and servicing of main and service lines and other gas distribution facilities.
• Investigate customer complaints pertaining to gas odors, fumes, and leakage using approved gas detection equipment.
• Operate power driving boring machines and/or power-driven tapping and plugging machines on high-pressure lines as needed.
• Prepare records and reports using a variety of input methods (paper, electronic).
• Follow standard operating procedures and promote good customer and public relations.
• Maintain records documenting compliance with procedures and regulations.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained in safe, functional, and compliant working conditions.
• Perform other duties as required in higher or lower job classifications based on operator qualifications (OQs).
• Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate PPE, complying with OSHA, DOT, and company-specific safety regulations.
• Participate in safety meetings, training, and emergency response drills.
• Identify and report unsafe conditions or potential hazards.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Serve as an individual contributor without formal supervisory responsibilities.
• Support and contribute toward team goals and objectives.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Must possess and maintain a Class D driver’s license with medical card.
• Successful completion of required testing.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 53 pounds independently and team-lift heavier loads safely following established safety procedures.
• Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, kneel, and/or crouch for extended periods, sometimes in confined spaces or awkward positions.
• Ability to climb ladders, stairs, etc., and maintain balance.
• Ability to navigate uneven, rough, or sloped terrain in all types of outdoor environments (e.g., construction sites, fields, roadside) with exposure to dust, dirt, insects, heat, cold, rain, or snow.
• Visual acuity to read site plans, maps, and drawings.
• Adequate hearing to respond to traffic and other job site hazards.
• Ability to operate a company vehicle safely and frequently enter/exit the vehicle throughout the workday.
• Ability to properly utilize all required PPE (e.g., safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, hearing protection, protective clothing) and perform duties for extended periods while wearing PPE.

Schedule

This is a full-time, non-exempt hourly position. Successful candidates will be expected to respond to emergencies, working extended day and callout overtime as needed, including after hours, weekends, and holidays. This position will report to the assigned City Plant.
