Utility Worker I

About the role

The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities is a public water and wastewater utility that delivers high-quality service to its customers. The department is committed to maintaining water quality standards and protecting local rivers and bays.

Responsibilities

• Install water meters and companion irrigation meters to residential homes and businesses.
• Install full services from the main to meter.
• Maintain cleanliness and stock levels on a construction truck.
• Repair, replace, and install water service lines.
• Install residential/commercial water meters.
• Operate and maintain various hand and powered tools.
• Drive and operate heavy equipment.
• Assist with other maintenance tasks as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One year of experience in a maintenance-related field.
• Current valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Class A CDL within one year of employment.
• Good communication and customer relations skills.
• Heavy lifting required.
• Ability to perform maintenance tasks using hand tools such as shovels and picks.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• One to three years of work experience in a maintenance field.
• Three to ten years of work experience performing skilled and semi-skilled labor associated with the maintenance, repair, and construction of water lines, services, meters, hydrants, and other associated maintenance equipment.
• Less than one year to more than fifteen years of professional experience working with computers.

Skills

• Hand tools (shovels, rakes, spades, etc.).
• Powered hand tools (jackhammers, pipe saws, chain saws, etc.).
• Driving tandem axle dump trucks with trailers.
• Operating heavy equipment.
• Using asphalt roller and other tools.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $43,442 - 66,249. Salary offered will be based on qualifications and experience.

Schedule

This position is part-time, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Uniform

This is a uniform required position. The county has a contracted third-party vendor that provides uniform services. The county will outfit you with appropriate cold-weather gear, in addition to all required PPE, including safety footwear and eyewear.
