Utility Worker
This is an Amalgamated Transit Union, Division 618 (ATU 618) position. All applicable bargaining unit selection criteria will be applied when considering applicants.
Effective January 29, 2016, through a Memorandum of Agreement between RIPTA and ATU 618, any employee hired or transferred into the Utility Worker position may not seek to transfer from that department into any other department until the employee has worked in the Utility Department for at least one (1) year from the date of hire/transfer. Absences from work during this one-year period designated as unexcused, sick, or disciplinary suspension will extend the one-year commitment by the time absent unless designated as FMLA or Workers Compensation.
About the role
The Utility Worker is responsible for assisting in all duties related to the upkeep of RIPTA vehicles and facilities. These positions may be assigned to day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts based on choose-up, and could be located at Providence or Newport campuses.
Responsibilities
- Fuel buses and drive them through the fuel line; check and replenish vehicle fluids, inspect tires, and vacuum interiors.
- Clean the exterior of buses using the automatic vehicle washer.
- Perform detailed interior cleaning of buses, including dusting, sweeping, removing gum and graffiti, washing seats, doors, windows, and wheelchair lifts.
- Operate drive-on and hand-operated floor cleaning equipment.
- Serve as Parts Washer: remove parts from the mechanical shop, clean them using steam equipment, hose them down, air dry, and return them to the shop.
- Use steam cleaning equipment to clean vehicle components or facilities.
- Perform janitorial duties within RIPTA facilities, including dusting, emptying trash, vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cleaning and restocking restrooms, and other areas.
- Perform other building maintenance and related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Valid CDL Driver License with Passenger, Air Brake, and General Knowledge endorsements required OR applicant must obtain a RI CDL permit with said endorsements prior to employment.
- Ability to work closely with other employees.
- Ability to work inside or outside depending on job assignment.
Pay
Salary range: $57,241.00 to $67,329.60 per annum.
