Utility Worker

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Department of Public Works Superintendent or Parks & Land Preservation Superintendent and the direction of the Lead Utility Worker, this role involves constructing and maintaining water and sewer systems, as well as operating, maintaining, and repairing Township property.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, and facilities.
• Operates and maintains a full range of public works vehicles, equipment, and tools.
• Responds to public complaints or inquiries under the direction of the Lead Utility Worker.
• Assists with snow and ice removal, and applies salt, sand, and other preventive materials as directed.
• May perform maintenance and construction of water and sewer systems.
• May perform maintenance of parks, land preserves, pathways, grounds, and facilities.
• Performs related work as required.

Requirements

• Ability to respond to emergency situations at irregular hours.
• Ability to assess situations critically, solve problems, and work effectively under stress and deadlines.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness.
• Valid State of Michigan Vehicle Operator's License; preference given to applicants with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• CDL with "A" and "N" endorsements required within six months.
• Two or more years of experience operating heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of water, sewer, facilities, grounds, and parks maintenance.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
• Knowledge of safety practices, equipment, methods, and materials in water/wastewater treatment and parks maintenance.
• Basic knowledge of maintenance practices for assigned equipment.
• Skill in operating vehicles, equipment, power tools, and computerized systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role involves manual labor and regular travel to other locations. Physical requirements include standing, walking, using hands, reaching, talking, hearing, and viewing work objects. Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and sitting are also required. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects of moderate and occasionally very heavy weight. The work environment regularly exposes the employee to outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, and noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud. Occasional exposure to confined spaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration may occur.
