Position Summary

Utility Workers perform manual work and are responsible for keeping County-owned facilities and property clean and safe for employee and public use as well as the safe and secure transport of county property. Work is performed using various cleaning and moving equipment.

Duties

  • Ensures sidewalks and building entrance areas are clean and free from debris and snow.
  • Moves and delivers furniture, file boxes, and equipment within buildings or to other county-owned buildings, including the warehouse, safely.
  • Uses safe practices to lift heavy equipment, furniture, and boxes.
  • Verifies accuracy of service requests and work orders.
  • Understands service requests and work orders and informs the foreman after each task is completed.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of vehicles used to transport oneself and deliveries.
  • Organizes County assets in an orderly fashion to protect them from damage.
  • Performs related work as directed that aligns with utility responsibilities.
  • Prepares facilities for special events by delivering and arranging furniture and other equipment.
  • In the event the utility worker elects to work overtime, the following duties will be required:
    • Performs all custodial worker and janitorial duties as assigned, including but not limited to: cleaning offices, hallways, stairwells, lavatories, walls, baseboards, carpeting, and so forth;
    • Replenishes lavatory and other supplies as needed.
    • Strips and refinishes floors.
    • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of:
    • Basic safety procedures, personnel management, and equal employment practices.
    • Cleaning procedures, building maintenance, and best practices for the maintenance of the facilities.
  • Skill in:
    • Lift up to 100 pounds.
    • Read and follow written work orders and directions as well as labels on cleaning supplies and equipment.
    • Follow policies, procedures and directions.
    • Learn methods used in cleaning public buildings and institutions and to use equipment and materials in a satisfactorily and safe manner including but not limited to small tools, snow blower, broom and dust pan, Billy Goat cleaning machine, cleaning supplies, pallet jack, and various dollies and other furniture moving equipment.
    • Learn and use proper and safe lifting, pushing and pulling techniques.
    • Drive a pick-up truck or other county-owned vehicle when transporting county property.
    • Maintain high work standards and quality orientation.
    • Maintain personal credibility in performing work and in interaction with others.
    • Establish and maintain courteous interactions with the public and employees within other county departments.
    • Manage work, plan, and prioritize.
    • Work independently and as part of a team.
    • Maintain accountability and take initiative.

Minimum Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • A valid PA Class C Driver’s license must be maintained while employed in the Utility Worker position.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment to the position.

Residency

Not required to live in Allegheny County

Veterans' Preference

Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
