About the role

The Utility Worker position at American Water is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to ensure efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection, and appearance of all pipelines. Key accountabilities include erecting barricades and placing safety lights, interpreting system maps and field locating water company assets, inspecting and repairing control devices, breaking up pavement, and lifting and maneuvering equipment and materials.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all functions of the position in a safe and conscientious manner, with constant regard for the safety of fellow employees and the general public.
  • Erects barricades and places safety lights around work sites to protect workers from street traffic; may flag traffic as required.
  • Ensures sites are secure before leaving.
  • Interprets system maps and field locates water company assets, remove and install water meters.
  • Inspects, disassembles, and repairs damaged or malfunctioning control devices of water distribution systems, using hand and/or power tools.
  • Breaks up pavement, using air hammer or other tools; manually digs ditches in preparation of laying or removing pipe or service lines; maneuvers pipe sections, valves and fittings into position.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver equipment and materials of varying weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Backfills excavations using compaction equipment on dirt, crusted stone and cold-mix; may operate small backhoe.
  • Inspects meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect leaks or malfunctioning.
  • Tightens pipe connections to prevent leaks using wrenches and other hand tools as required.
  • Uses technology to prepare requisitions and/or reports to appropriately maintain service records.
  • May be assigned to perform responsibilities either individually or in conjunction with other employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, such as Meter Reading and Field Service work.

Requirements

  • Must possess basic geographical knowledge of company's service area and must be adaptable to variations in topography and weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of company policies, procedures and safety practices as well as regulations regarding confined spaces.
  • Able to operate company equipment and vehicles necessary for completion of assigned responsibilities.
  • Possess general labor experience to include excavation and backfill.
  • Must possess a GED/High School Diploma.

Qualifications

  • Must maintain a valid drivers license and safe driving record.
  • Must maintain DOT certification.

Skills

  • Basic geographical knowledge of company's service area.
  • Adaptability to variations in topography and weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of company policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Regulations regarding confined spaces.

Pay

This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.
