Posted pay range: $31.83/hour. This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, with opportunities for continued salary growth.

About the role

The Utility Person performs a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection system facilities. The shift for this position is Tuesday–Saturday, 7:30 AM–4:00 PM.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, operates, maintains, troubleshoots, installs, and repairs water distribution and wastewater collection system facilities, including:
    • Water mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines
    • Sewer lines, manholes, and service laterals
    • Pumping and flow control facilities
  • Responds to customer service inquiries, including service disruptions, service line problems, and grinder pump malfunctions.
  • Investigates complaints and determines corrective action per company procedure.
  • Performs new service activity, including tap installation and recordkeeping.
  • Monitors plant operations (as needed), water distribution, and wastewater collection systems, making adjustments as directed to control operations.
  • Operates and maintains plant process equipment as directed.
  • Completes all necessary forms, sketches, and field notes; uses maps and records.
  • Maintains all necessary records, tools, and work equipment.
  • Performs maintenance and light construction duties, including repairs and/or improvements to physical plant, custodial duties, and related building and grounds activities.
  • Performs facility mark-out pursuant to Pennsylvania One-Call.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Position is subject to 24-hour call-out and overtime.

Requirements

  • GED/High School graduate or state-recognized education equivalency certificate.
  • PA DOT Certification required.
  • Valid PA Driver’s license.

Skills

  • Mechanical ability sufficient to understand the operation of pumps, valves, motors, and other mechanical equipment related to operations and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of distribution/collection systems.

Work Environment

  • Work involves environmental conditions, including contact with wastewater, chemicals, fumes, odors, and dust from handling potentially hazardous wastewater treatment and laboratory chemicals.
  • Exposure to potentially harmful pathogens and gases in raw, unprocessed wastewater, creating potential for bloodborne/airborne disease.
  • Electrical hazard conditions.
  • Exposure to inclement weather, mostly of short duration.
