About the role

The Missouri Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned electric, natural gas, steam, water and sewer utilities in Missouri, ensuring safe and reliable utility services at just, reasonable, and affordable rates. The Auditing Department focuses on forensic analysis of utilities' books and records, identifying unusual financial activity, trends, and anomalies, and ensuring compliance with Missouri statutes and Commission rules. Recommendations are made to the Commission through expert testimony in both written and oral formats.

Responsibilities

  • Perform audits and examinations of investor-owned utility companies operating within the State of Missouri.
  • Analyze financial data to identify anomalies, trends, and unusual activity.
  • Prepare detailed audit workpapers, schedules, and reports supporting recommendations to the Commission.
  • Present oral and written testimony in formal rate cases before the Commission.
  • Up to 30% travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, economics, or a closely related field with a minimum of 15 hours in accounting (December graduates are welcome to apply).
  • 0-2 years of professional accounting experience.
  • Must be familiar with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, and writing skills are essential.
  • Computer experience required, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access software applications preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree and 15 hours in accounting.
  • Experience in auditing and financial analysis is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Missouri statutes and Commission rules is necessary.
