Utility Plant Mechanic
About the role
The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities is a public water and wastewater utility that delivers high-quality service to its customers. The department is committed to maintaining water quality standards and protecting local rivers and bays.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of the county’s underground water distribution system infrastructure and facilities.
- Respond to customer concerns regarding water quality or pressure.
- Perform groundskeeping and housekeeping tasks at water distribution facilities.
- Complete service requests and work orders on a county-owned computer.
- Use hand and powered tools for various maintenance tasks.
- Drive utility trucks with trailers to transport materials and equipment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three years of experience in a maintenance-related field.
- Some computer skills are preferred.
- Good communication and customer relations skills.
- Ability to lift heavy objects.
- Current valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Qualifications
- Good mechanical aptitude.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Team player with the ability to develop positive working relationships.
Skills
- Hand tools such as shovels, rakes, spades, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
- Powered hand tools such as pipe saws, chain saws, impact wrenches, etc.
- Hydraulic man lifts and ladders.
- Utility trucks with trailers.
Benefits
The compensation and benefits package includes the Virginia Retirement System, long and short-term disability, and paid time off (PTO) with the option to convert overtime and on-call hours into compensatory time. The salary range for this position is $45,732 – 61,725, with the salary offered based on qualifications and experience.

Schedule
This position is part-time, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work location is Utilities, Chesterfield County.
