Utility Person - Dredge

About the role

The Utility Person position is an entry-level role in plant maintenance, ensuring a safe, efficient, and continuous production of operations. This role is essential in material handling, housekeeping, and equipment support—helping to optimize operational flow and quality standards. It involves various manual and equipment-based tasks to support plant operations and maintenance, with a strong emphasis on safety, adaptability, and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Operates production and plant-specific mobile equipment (e.g., skid steer, water truck, front-end loader) safely and efficiently within company guidelines and safety standards.
• Uses standard operating procedures to troubleshoot malfunctions or issues.
• Participates in plant operations, including production, loading, and shipping.
• Under direct supervision, adjusts equipment to maximize production.
• Assists in more complex repairs, including basic cutting and welding under the guidance of a Supervisor or Lead Person.
• Uses hand shovels, rakes, and power tools to remove spilled material from around conveyor tail powers and under plant structures.
• Operates and assists with skid steers, backhoes, pavers, rollers, loaders, and water trucks as required.
• Conducts routine preventive maintenance on plant and mobile equipment: greasing, lubricating, replacing belts/bearings, splicing conveyors.
• Performs pre- and post-shift inspections; maintains accurate maintenance logs and reports irregularities.
• Ensures work areas, machinery, and roads are clean and safe using tools such as shovels and sweeps.
• Provides operational support across departments: stockpile management, housekeeping, and maintenance.
• Assists with additional tasks outside core responsibilities as needed, including duties outside the typical scope of the role to support overall team operations and organizational needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience.
• 3+ years of prior experience in the Aggregate Industry, preferred; experience in Plant Operations and Maintenance is a plus.
• Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
• Knowledge of MSHA compliance and regulations.
• Strong time management skills.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for plant maintenance and equipment servicing.
• Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach.
• Must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or ladders.
• Strong hand-eye-foot coordination is essential for operating hand/foot controls.
• Must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

• All duties require outside assignments and periods of work in all weather conditions: cold, wet, dry, and dusty.
• Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dBs.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $25–$35 per hour, exclusive of benefits or bonuses. The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience.
