Responsible for exhibiting Gregory Electric Company’s Mission, Vision, and Values with customers, agencies, vendors, and co-workers. The High Voltage Utility Overhead Operator is semi-skilled in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground distribution systems. Based out of Greenville, SC, with travel required to local job sites as needed.
Responsibilities
- Safely work new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de-energized overhead and underground distribution systems based on receiving and following directions
- Working knowledge of construction standards and installation
- Assist lineman with overhead wire, pole set up with anchors, installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear
- Able to set up work zone according to DOT standards
- Safely operate Digger/Derrick and dig hole, load, set, and pull poles in HOT primary
- Understand basic rigging, handlines, lineman knot tying, and induced voltage
- Understand minimum approach distance, excavation, shoring, and ladder requirements
- Able to set up, maintain, check out, position, and safely operate bucket truck
- Safely use gloves, protective gear, and line protection devices
- Participate in random drug and alcohol testing that supports Gregory’s commitment to a drug-free workplace
Requirements
- Advanced ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, work orders, instructions, and procedures
- Understands equipment set up and grounding
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, use of the Internet, email, iPad, and industry-related programs
- Proficiency in critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem resolution
- Maintain and safely operate company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order
- General knowledge of OSHA standards and guidelines for energized and de-energized working conditions
- Exceptional ability to actively listen and communicate effectively (written, verbal, and nonverbal)
- Requires self-motivation, organization, and prioritization management
- Adhere to Gregory Electric’s safety rules and company policies
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Technical degree, 1–3 years’ field experience, extensive mechanical ability, or a combination of education and/or experience
- Certifications or experience preferred in the following areas:
- CDL A (preferred) or the ability to obtain
- OSHA certifications
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 60 pounds
- Able to properly inspect, wear, and remove OSHA-required personal protective equipment
- Accurately perform basic math calculations to include addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, and the use of measurements
- Able to climb utility poles and related equipment
- Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces with different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.)
- Frequently perform overhead work requiring the use of both hands and securing 30 pounds
- Possess hand dexterity and strength to operate common hand and power tools
- Must be able to stand and walk on pavement/ground for prolonged periods of time
- Requires rigorous physical labor: climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, push, or pull
- Regularly reaches with hands/arms with full range of motion
- Performs excavations of dirt, rock, concrete, and other materials using hand tools and power equipment
Travel Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be fully insured according to South Carolina law
- Maintain a driving record with less than 6 points
- Ability to travel within Gregory Electric’s territory when required
- Ability to drive both automatic and standard transmission vehicles
- Proven ability to operate a vehicle safely and within legal and regulatory requirements
Work Environment
- Some exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold, ice, wind)
- Ability to work outdoors continuously for 8 to 16 hours per day
- Able to work overtime when requested
- Noise level is moderate to loud
- Occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at job sites
