Utility Operator
About the role
The Utility Operator is responsible for the safe, environmentally sound, and efficient daily operation of the facility and heavy equipment. This is a fast-paced environment with three Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) processing lines that operate continuously. Each processing line has three hoppers that must be monitored and emptied into the cleanup conveyor using a forklift. Each hopper fills approximately every 5–8 minutes, requiring the operator to stay alert and respond quickly to maintain continuous operation safely.
Position Responsibilities
- Safe operations of heavy equipment (forklift).
- Monitor all assigned processing lines and empty hoppers as needed to prevent backups and maintain production.
- Keep processing lines supplied and operating without interruption.
- Communicate effectively with Control Room Operators, supervisors, and other team members to ensure safe and efficient operations using Radio.
- Perform daily routine inspections of assigned equipment and fills out necessary log sheets according to procedures.
- Perform troubleshooting on equipment and report all malfunctioning equipment through the issuance of work orders.
- Perform checks as required by the weekly activities book, the monthly critical items check list, etc.
- Maintain proper fuel, lubricant, and oil levels for operation of assigned equipment.
- Perform lockout and tagout of equipment in support of maintenance activities.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment and an orderly work area.
- Able to work in a fast-paced industrial environment.
- Strong attention to safety and situational awareness.
- Performs additional tasks as directed by the Shift Supervisor, or his or her designee.
Position Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment (front loaders, excavators, dozer, skid steer, bobcat, etc.).
- Must be able to pass respiratory fit tested on a daily basis.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
Physical Demands Of The Role
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb.
- Ability to lift/carry 50lbs.
- Ability to work from heights and in confined spaces.
- Qualify to wear a full-face respirator.
- Consistently work in various weather conditions.
- Able to work independently while communicating effectively with the operations team.
Shift Rotations
Rotating 8-hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
